Jerry VanderLugt, CPA, CFP®, CVA
Founder & Principal
Jerry graduated from Ferris State University with a degree in accounting. He earned his Certified Public Accountant (CPA®) designation in 1980, the Certified Financial Planner (CFP®) designation in 1990 and the Certified Valuation Analyst (CVA) designation in 2013. He began his professional career in public accounting, working closely with business owners and their companies by performing all aspects of audit and accounting related services, as well as preparing income tax returns for businesses and individuals. Jerry also regularly advised business owners on their personal finances, investments, and estate planning.
In 1994, Jerry founded a family office advisory firm to provide a wide array of financial-related services to a select group of successful individuals and businesses. In response to an increased demand for his services, he expanded his practice in 2002 by opening JVL Associates, LLC, a registered investment advisory firm, to provide investment advisory and wealth management services to his growing list of successful clients.
Jerry works closely with clients to strategically manage their assets to help them meet their financial goals as well as walk them through various estate planning strategies that meet the financial goals of future generations. Jerry has assisted clients in the implementation of Family Investment Companies and a wide variety of strategic Trust arrangements. Jerry truly enjoys walking clients through the complexities of a well thought out Estate Plan and has experience in a wide variety of successful wealth transfer strategies.
Jerry and his wife, Diane, have six children and eleven grandchildren. In addition to spending time with their family, Jerry and Diane enjoy traveling, and he likes to remain active by hiking, biking, and running.
Matt Kunnen, CFA, CFP®
Matt graduated, Summa Cum Laude, from Cornerstone University with degrees in Finance and Business Management. He earned his Chartered Financial Analyst ® (CFA®) designation in 2015 and the Certified Financial Planner (CFP®) designation in 2017. He began his career working as an investment consultant for a national firm.
Matt has been part of the JVL team since 2013. Matt works with clients to help them achieve their financial goals by helping them better understand their investment temperament and how various investment strategies interact with their overall plan. Matt conducts ongoing research and analysis on these investment strategies as well as specific security selection. He also provides daily oversight of client portfolios with the objective of enhancing both investment performance and tax efficiency for our clients. Matt enjoys building relationships with clients as he works to help them meet their financial goals.
Matt and his wife Amber have two boys, Isaiah (Zae) and Alexander (Zander). Matt enjoys spending time with family and friends. Matt is active in his Church, currently serving as a deacon and finance chair. Matt serves on the Board and is Treasurer of the CFA® Society of West Michigan.
Chad Soukup, CPA, CFP®
Chad graduated from Grand Valley State University with a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting and a Master’s in Business Administration (MBA). He earned his Certified Public Accountant (CPA®) designation in 2009, the Certified Financial Planner (CFP®) designation in 2010 and is currently a Level III Chartered Financial Analyst ® (CFA®) Candidate. He started his career in 2007 with a large independent registered investment advisor and accounting firm. He served successful families, business owners, and virtual family offices with all aspects of their financial, retirement, estate, income tax, philanthropic, and investment planning needs.
Chad joined the JVL team in early 2019 bringing his passion for helping successful families and business owners evaluate their financial position, define their personal financial goals, and build and execute comprehensive plans and solutions to maximize successful outcomes. He focuses on helping clients increase their income tax efficiency and risk management by coordinating all aspects of a client’s personal balance sheet. Chad has advised families in implementing Investment LLC’s, managing estate tax exposure, developing strategic Trust arrangements, and creating well thought out philanthropic and multi-generational gifting strategies.
Chad and his wife Sara have two children, Calvin and Fiona. Chad enjoys camping with family and friends, playing guitar, reading science fiction, psychology, and history books, and playing strategic board games with his wife and kids.
